A Vision Centre is not an eye camp!
It is important to design the vision centre with the community needs in mind. For a vision centre to be successful in terms of footfalls and surgery and spectacle yield, it is important that the scope of services is comprehensive.
The Aravind network of 120+ vision centres handle over 1.1 million patient visits each year through which 48,500 cataract surgeries are done and 132,000 spectacles are provided, besides 70,000 patients receiving tertiary eye care. These centres have also been able to achieve a 80% coverage of the eye care needs of the community they serve within 5 years - demonstrating a sustainable model for universal eye health. In more ways than one, this vision centre model of service delivery also reduces the carbon footprint of eye care.
Closer to the Community, Stronger in Numbers: The Theni Vision Centre Network
Vision Centres have the potential to transform rural access to eye care. Aravind Eye Hospital, Theni has a network of seven rural Vision Centres that extend comprehensive primary eye care across the district. These full-time centres significantly contribute to the volumes of the base hospital while providing true coverage of the community’s eye care needs.
